Gardening is a much-loved pastime by many people around the world, with Canadians being no exception. It can be a great hobby for people who may want to get some light exercise, relax, or simply get some fresh air. To better inform gardeners, Canada has a number of different hardiness zones. The purpose of these zones is to show gardeners of which type of trees, shrubs and flowers can withstand the conditions in certain areas. Due to the cold climate and short growing season, this system can be a great help to beginners wanting to start work on a garden.

Seasonal sales

Monthly sales of lawn and garden equipment in Canada peak in May each year before the main growing season kicks off around the country. To prepare for such sales, garden centers across the country need to increase their stocks. For example, the production volume of potted plants and outdoor hanging pots usually peaks at this time of year as well.

Retail

Home Depot is one of the most popular home and garden retailers in North America. The American DIY chain had 182 stores across Canada in 2021. Taking into consideration nursery stores and garden centers, the province of Ontario had the highest number of garden supply stores as of June 2021 with 413, followed by British Columbia with 222. The majority of flower and plant sales in Canada in 2021 were through mass market chain stores, with sales from domestic wholesalers taking second place. It appears that Canadians also enjoy growing their own food at home, with sales of fruit and vegetable horticulture products steadily growing each year to reach around two billion Canadian dollars in 2021.
